Expressive writing is more of a free-flow writing and flurry of ideas for the writer. chapter 6; introducing technical vocabulary

"Investigation into the meaning of words is where wisdom begins" -Antisthenes

reserach says we should introduce technical vocab before reading begins.

Nature of Words-
words are symbols for concepts. The reader brings meaning to these symbols with their own experience.
many concepts share the same word. we have to keep in mind context and learners cultural background and prior knowledge.

Myth that words teach themselves-
inductive approach to vocab learning is simple repetition and experience of what that word is, ex. the word 'book'

formal definitions-
intro a word with definition and example, this is deductive. start from a general rule(a word/definition), and consider examples.

feature analysis-
intro a group of concepts from the same category with a feature analysis.

graphic organizers-
chart showing how key concepts are related
tre diagram
venn diagram
timetables and other continua
labled pictures
sociograms-
symatic maps- concepts with relational examples labeling them
