(cartoon credit. Seriously, we need to constantly remind teachers and presenters everywhere that we have to deliver a good presentation, PP can't do it for us. And if you are reading what is on the slides, you are likely pissing off a lot of people for wasting their time.)
10 exception presentations later and I feel like saying we spend more time associating labels and categories to different types of learners, physical abilities, and behaviors, that we aren't spending enough time simply being with the students and connecting on a human level. With that said, I do find it important to study different behaviors, physical abilities, and learners so as to be the most prepared teacher I can be for all learners. And it is no joke that some learners need and deserve extra help.
I chose these three presentations because some part of the presentation style struck me as a good example to follow when I am presenting to a class. Bellow is what I learned from my classmates on
GATE
This presentation was very interesting since the presenter was a GATE student in elementary school. I was particularly interested in the fact that the coldwar/space race was fueled by a national talent hunt. The US government invested money in programs that just started to dry up during George W.. Bush era priorities.
sexual abuse
I found it very helpful that the presenter gave a brief on legal responsibilities as mandated court reporters surrounding sexual abuse. This information kept us connected to the presentation and offered a little diversion from simple facts surrounding sexual abuse.
I also learned from watching how the presenter, a technology teacher already in the classroom, re-explained a concept in response to confusion of terms. The presenter took a slow breath and approached it from another angle and was able to get across to the audience question.
eating disorders
Disorders are often painted with the shadows of what is unhealthy, or disorderly. So it was refreshing to start this presentation with a lesson on dietary facts and dietary needs of various age groups for human health. I also learned a little more about the cycles of someone trapped in un-healthy eating habits faces day-to-day. The presenter used a story from a previous class who's weight problems were being fueled by him not being accommodated in school with a proper chair. And something as simple as a proper chair can trigger a healthy development for the learner.
