Class Notes

the system at the teacher/training level is a mess. There seems to be no solid way in. the private sector is taking the opportunity where the public system is falling apart. It is pumping out teachers, but it is not focusing on the systemic failure. In fact two administrators I have come across here at NU are trying to underplay the situation.
Chzech is wasting 20 minutes of our class time to do her job.
I don't what to be down on these guys. I think especially Kimo, is a great teacher, no doubt. But I think they are opportunist in a system failing and they are driving the private system, which is just any old corporation and the beauracrcy is f'd up. I know this already
If these guys can get accredited to give out teaching credentials, I can devise an open source version of a teaching credential program that is a hybrid of sign-up, appointed, and pay. it is an educational NPO. Plumbob Ed.
-masters degree opens up a higher pay scale for teachers. without, you cap out at 59,000 in San Jose district.

student interviews round2: 4 sophmores Overfelt High School
-no drivers ed?
-1 of 4 has an internet connected computer..
-they have option to go to CCOC. have to be juniors. have to have 100 credits.
-they all admit that they are passing some courses without knowing the material.
-Kimo helped them learn to control themselves
-just the question of what is their best accomplishment, one of the students was getting very uncomfortable to talk about it, so it looked.
-a lot of electives are parent funded. per seat, or a booster club, comes from the community. which is what WCO High did with the green academy. knocking on doors to raise awareness and money. grassroots.
-they try and keep only classes that are pertinent to getting a job.
-they all said they can't relate to history taught in class, one was excited to get to mexico history
-notice that teachers pay is not effected by kids performance. this makes passion a primary significance to teacher unlike any other job.
-remember that it is one thing to talk being a MEAN ... teacher, but it is another to get in there and basically having to implement the systems agenda. you gotta walk between the lines.

presentations:
I need to have a separate section for class notes and random thoughts that I pull from for class reflections.

-assessment v. evaluation: assessment is on going and fluctuates. evaluation is a snapshop like a test. doesn;t tell you the effeort level of students.

-why does a high school grad have to take the CBEST to sub. Subs should be built into the system, not a seperate track.
-I think we can develop a decentralized system that answers several needs for education and society. It will produce many more teachers, and also create career paths starting in middle school to build and maintain ecological structures. This will in a generation launch the foundation for a new global society and infrastructure.
-note taking, or student record of "whats important" is not a one way street. They need to be held responsible for what is in class, but the teacher/system has to allow for the student to record their thoughts that are relative to class material. assessment is very important, that is, keeping up with student record. we need to have students work and thoughts on the browser so that teachers can look in on their thoughts and have a conversation with the students.

-kimo shows that there is no time for Authentic assessment and we have to make time for them. we have to alter the system to make it a priority. portfolio is another way to assess.
