It is our responsibility to make sure that we educate ourselves and that we share the sentiment with each other and share in the journey. The expenses he talks about are many in my view. There are monetary exenses of course. There are also expenses of time and patience to help everyone with the best of our ability to value and pursue an education. Expense of civic duty to make sure the system is working and electing the right people to conduct educational policy.
Kimo pointed out that we have not reached the ideal that Adams talked about. In the US it seems that citizens have a sense of entitlement to education but don't feel compelled to be generous rather than conservative when it's time to contribute more money or time, resources etc.
