Welcome. March 3, 2009

Howdy! A couple changes going on here. I'm not talking about the economy going into spasms, but more positive changes in my life!

Family!

First off, Amy and I officially became a family with the birth of our first son, Taylor! One month ago today, Taylor surprised us all by insisting on coming out 3 weeks early, perfectly healthy and ready to get started with this life!

Drupal

This website is built with Drupal; an open source content management system. It is a very healthy and thriving community of people developing tomorrow's communications tools. Up until now, this site has been using an image handling system(image.module) that seems to be falling out of favor for more powerful methods(Image_field/imagecache and Views). I believe after much reading and tinkering that the latter system is the future of Drupal and this upgrade was a long time coming. I finally took 2 days off from the classroom to devote to manually converting my site's images to this new system. This means a few things.
First, some of the links from the pre-upgrade site will be broken for sure! Others might be broken, I'm not sure how it will play out completely, but the damage won't be that bad. It would have been much worse the longer I waited to make the switch. And Second, it means that I am more squarely on the path to becoming a site designer/developer since I successfully made the upgrade and took it live! I have to admit I didn't make the upgrade in the cleanest way possible; by actually going into the database tables and altering them at that level. I simply deleted all the images, and redefined the image handling, then re-uploaded most of the images. If it works, it works!
I now have much more control over how I sort, group, and display images and content. For now, the 'images' link at the top only shows a very simple view of all the images on the site. That will change shortly to be a more fully featured gallery.

Taylor Pics

As for the one area of the site that people come to visit most, pics of Taylor, you can find a simple gallery here. The little slideshow to the left ill soon have a link to that page too, as soon as i figure out whats wrong with my settings.

enjoy!
