I submitted a poster design over at Green Patriot Posters. It is an effort to make the new "Rosie the Riviter" image for the green movement. The site users can vote and comment on the poster submissions and the chosen posters will be printed and used. I chose to focus on passive solar design because I believe it has to be the foundation of our infrastructure to be truly sustainable. Check out the contest and my poster, and I know it's annoying, but if you have time, sign up and vote for it! Please.
There is a great section on the contest site that has examples of government(?) posters from World War II. They are all of the style of Rosie the Riviter and have the same message; that it is patriotic to be mindful of resources, save energy, grow gardens, and unite through a common goal. However, the goal is to defeat a foreign enemy, our country still came together like never before and lived very differently for a cause. Those posters and those actions are exactly what we need to replicate today, but obviously with some added reasons on top of national security.
What are some of the social factors that allowed these posters to be received that are not (or maybe they are) present today. Can we imagine our new administration printing and broadcasting some of these messages today? Or is it up to the people and efforts of the internet connected society?
